Days of the week

WORD STUDIES

NOTE: Sabbath is also abbreviated ש"ק for 5abat qode5 or Holy Sabbath

In Hebrew the days of the week are

1. Yom ri54on יום ראשון
2. Yom 5eni יום שני
3. Yom 5li5i יום שלישי
4. Yom rvi7i יום רביעי
5. Yom cami5i יום חמישי
6. Yom 5i5i יום שישי
7. 5abat שבת

In Hebrew the days of the week are numbered with only one exception... The seventh day. Why?

Exodus 20:8 (KJV)

8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

The Hebrew mind is always longing for the day of rest. That is why the days are numbered until you reach the Sabbath. By giving the Sabbath which means rest a distinct name we are in effect remembering it. The Sabbath must be set apart. This 'setting apart of the Sabbath' is reflected even in Hebrew acronyms for the days of the week. The first six letters of the Hebrew alphabet are used for the first six days of the week. But when you get to the Sabbath ש is used instead of ז. Another pleasant example of how language does effect the speaker. But also try to remember, ancient Israel was a culture that relied heavily on the moon for keeping track of time. Don't be surprised that evening begins the day and not morning. Evening of the fourth day in English is a 24 hour difference from evening of the fourth day in Hebrew.
